Col. Lloyd G. Huggins

Col. Lloyd G. Huggins, U.S. Army Retired, age 92, died Monday, December 9, 2013 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He settled in Petersburg in 1972 after retiring from the Army.

Col. Huggins was a 30 year veteran of the U.S. Army, having entered the service as a Second Lieutenant infantry from the R.O.T.C. in 1942. He was later commissioned as a Captain Infantry, Regular Army, in 1946. He served as a rifle company commander in the 9th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II where he was twice wounded. In 1950, while stationed in Japan with the 25th Infantry Division, Huggins went to Korea with the 1st Battalion 35th, Infantry. He received two promotions and commanded the battalion during its drive to the Yalu River on the Chinese border.

Col. Huggins later served as Chief of Staff, 2nd Infantry Division during a second tour in Korea in 1965. He graduated from the Army Aviation School and later commanded Ft. Wolters and the Primary Helicopter School located near Mineral Wells, TX. His last assignment before retiring was as the Chief of Staff, U.S. Army South in Panama, CZ. He was a graduate of George Washington University, the Infantry School, the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. He was on the faculty of the British Army Staff College and the Armed Forces Staff College.

A highly decorated combat veteran, Huggins was awarded: two Combat Infantry Badges, two Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars, two Legions of Merit and the Distinguished Service Medal. He was a Lifetime Member of the Retired Officer Association and the U.S. Army War College Alumni Association.

Col. Huggins was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Louise Johnson Huggins formerly of Center, TX. He is survived by his son, Robert and wife, Missy of Atlanta, GA, son, Stephen and wife, Marsha of Redwood City, CA, daughter, Patricia Fitzsimmons and husband, Jeffrey of Waverly, VA, as well as five grandchildren: Samantha, Andrew, Patrick, Sarah and William and a great granddaughter, Emma Grace.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on December 28, 2013 at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. The interment service with full military honors will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, VA.
