Lloyd George Spence, Sr., age 86, of Chester, VA, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2011. He was born in Greenbrier County, WV, the son of the late George W. and Bessie Hodges Spence. His greatest love and his legacy were his family and friends. Mr. Spence was also preceded in death by his first wife Betty Hanna Spence; daughter, Penny Spence McCulloch; and grandson, L.G. Spence, III. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Catherine Hartsook Spence; children, Pam Masters (Larry), Lloyd G. â??Peteâ? Spence, Jr. (Ellen), Pat Walters (Dan), Paul Spence (Carolyn); son-in-law, Dave McCulloch; 5 step-children, Jennifer McDaniel (Tim), Dean, Vicki, Shelley and Greg Wilmoth; grandchildren, Joe (Latha), Emily and Elizabeth Masters, Cam (Lindsey), Wendy and Troy Spence, Daniel (Nicole), Virginia and David Walters, Meredith (Dale) Glass, Avery, Aryn and Ashton Spence, Megan, David and Kipp McCulloch and Rachel McDaniel; great-grandchildren, Kavi and Sachin Masters, Cailey Spence and Carson Walters; and sister, Louise Legg. Mr. Spence was a veteran in WWII serving in the Merchant Marines. He was a charter member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and retired as an electrical engineer from Allied Chemical with 30 plus years of service. Mr. Spence was a member of Chester Presbyterian Church, Chester Masonic Lodge #94 A.F. and A.M., and the Chester Civitan Club. He also volunteered as a special friend at Harrowgate Elementary School. A Masonic memorial ceremony will take place on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Chesterfield chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, followed by a visitation until 8 p.m. Funeral services will follow on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at the Chester Presbyterian Church, with interment afterwards in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester.
