Lois Smith Clark

February 28, 1931 — August 18, 2024

Lois Smith Clark, 93, of Petersburg, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on August 18, 2024. A Virginia native she was the daughter of the late Samuel Plato Smith and Mildred Scott Smith. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Clark, Jr.; as well as her brother, Robert E. Smith.

She is survived by her sons, William David Clark and his wife, Lynn, of Prince George, VA and Jeffrey Smith Clark and his wife, Toni, of Petersburg, VA; her daughter, Catherine Clark Witherspoon and her husband, Bobby, of Chesterfield, VA; grandsons, Matthew David Clark and his wife, Allison, of Richmond, VA, Daniel Scott Clark and his wife, Katie, of Radford, VA, and Robert David Witherspoon III, of Chesterfield, VA; as well as great-grandsons, Matthew Thomas Clark and Henry David Clark. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Ronn Carroll (Ronald Smith) and his wife, Anne, of Greenville, SC; sister-in-law, Barbara Jones Smith, of Richmond, VA; as well as nieces, Carol Smith Slater, of New Kent, VA, and Kimberly Smith, of Sebastian, FL.

Lois was born in Petersburg where she graduated from Petersburg High School in 1948. After high school, she attended Mary Washington College before transferring to the College of William and Mary where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952. While attending William and Mary, she was a member of Chi Omega sorority as well as Kappa Delta Pi honor society in education.

Lois had a love for teaching. She impacted numerous students throughout her career. She taught Spanish, English, and History at various schools. She started her career teaching Spanish at Warwick High School in Newport News, VA. Some of her best memories were during her time at Bollingbrook School in Petersburg, VA. She also taught in Petersburg Public Schools at both the elementary and secondary levels. She ended her teaching career at St. James Catholic School in Hopewell, VA. She has touched many lives throughout her teaching career and have encouraged others including two of her children to enter the field of education.

She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church as well as the Country Club of Petersburg. She was also a member of Raleigh Parish and Petersburg Garden Clubs. Lois served one term on the Petersburg School Board.

There will be a memorial service for Lois at Saint Mark's United Methodist Church, 225 Claremont Street, Petersburg, VA. at 1:30 P.M., on Friday, September 13, 2024. A Celebration of Life will follow the service at The Country Club of Petersburg, at 1250 Flank Road, Petersburg, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Crater Community Hospice, 3916 South Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805 or Saint Mark's United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 1905, Petersburg, VA 23805.
