Lora McCowan Poole, 92, a retired homemaker, died of a subdural hematoma on March 24, 2009 at Johnston- Willis Hospital in Richmond Virginia. She resided at Brighter Living Assisted Living in Hopewell, Virginia and was formerly of Chester, Virginia. Born in Dickenson County, Virginia to Emma and Will McCowan, she attended Roanoke Womenâ??s College and met her future husband in Clintwood, who was stationed nearby in the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1939, they left Dickenson County and moved to Hopewell, Virginia and later to Chester where they established a loving home and raised their four children.
Mrs. Poole was active in the Enon Baptist Church, devoutly participating in all church activities, choirs and classes and also supported its recent fundraising efforts to build a new sanctuary. She was a consummate sports enthusiast and loved watching professional basketball as she played the sport in high school. She was also a great fan of professional baseball. An avid gardener and community supporter, she belonged to various garden clubs and the Womenâ??s Optimist Club of Enon. After her husbandâ??s retirement, they bought a second home and wintered in Winter Haven, Florida while traveling extensively throughout the United States. Survivors include her daughter, Willie Jo Elmore and son-in-law Maurice Elmore of Newport News, Virginia; daughter Sandra Survello and son-in-law Paul Survello of Richmond, Virginia; daughter Susan Johnson and son-in-law Peter Johnson of Vienna, Virginia and son Bruce Poole and daughter-in-law Janice Poole of Bristol, Connecticut. She leaves behind four grandchildren: Maurice, Jr. and Wendy Elmore and Ashlee and Jay Poole. She is survived by three great-grandchildren: Joshua and Kaitlyn Elmore and Gemma Poole. Mrs. Poole remained close and often visited her many relatives in Haysi and Clintwood, Virginia. The family will receive friends Friday, March 27, 2009 from 7-8:30 P.M. in the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the Hopewell Chapel with Rev. Doug S Echols, officiating.
