Born in Belmont, MA, Martin graduated in 1953 from Boston University with a B.A. degree in Communications. He was commissioned as a 2LT in the United States Air Force and entered flight training immediately. Upon graduating he was selected as a fighter pilot. He flew missions in South East Asia, Europe, and North Africa. He flew the fighter bomber jet Sabre F-16F, fighter reconnaissance jet RF84, and long range fighter jet F101 (which traveled at nearly twice the speed of sound). He served in many posts across the nation and across the world, including Air Force ‘Top Gun’ training at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, NV; in Germany as part of the post WWII occupation force; in Charleston SC, Atlanta GA, Colorado Springs CO, Otis AFB MA, Korea, South Vietnam, Biloxi MO, Andrews AFB, MD, and the Pentagon. Upon retirement as a USAF Lt Col, he earned a Master’s degree in Education and taught aerospace science for 12 years at DuVal High School in Prince George’s County in MD.
After his final retirement from teaching, Martin taught Fundamental Math at Chesterfield County Jail, was a ‘buddy reader’ at Matoaca Elementary School, volunteered at St. Augustine’s food pantry and children’s liturgy, and was an active volunteer for the Crater Hospice organization.
