Lucile Tench Parsons

d. February 20, 2012

Lucile Lindsey Tench Parsons of Hopewell passed away February 20, 2012. She was 96.

Born August 8, 1915, in what is now the Blandford neighborhood of Petersburg, Va., Lucile was the youngest child of James and Della Rebecca Scarborough Tench. She attended Petersburg City Public Schools and was the Salutatorian of Petersburg High Schoolâ??s Class of 1933. That same year, a poem written by Lucile was awarded second place in a statewide poetry competition for young people.

Though Lucile aspired to a career in writing, exposure to tuberculosis required her to be interned at Blue Ridge Sanitorium in Charlottesville. With her health restored, Lucile drew on that experience to pursue a career in nursing. She performed her training at Blue Ridge, and was certified as a Registered Nurse through the University of Virginia Hospital.

Returning home to her beloved Petersburg, Lucile went on to work at John Randolph Hospital in Hopewell and, later, as a plant nurse at Hercules, Inc., where she met Howard Parsons. The couple married in 1951 and had two sons: Howard Tolar Parsons, Jr., of Charlottesville; and James Tench Parsons of Bristow.

Howard, Sr., passed away in 1974.

A member of St. Johnâ??s Episcopal Church in Hopewell, Lucile was active in St. Catherineâ??s Guild and served a term on the vestry. She was also a member of the Hopewell Womenâ??s Club, the Historic Hopewell Foundation, and Friends of the Appomattox Regional Library.

In addition to her sons, Lucile is survived by a daughter-in-law, Judith Vilagos Parsons of Charlottesville; a nephew, Truman Tench of Enon; nieces Marcia T. Kirtley of Salisbury, N.C.; Caroline Carrington of Dinwiddie County, Va., and Mary Mayes of Chaska, Minn.; great-nieces Jo Frith of Hopewell; Jewel Malerich of Buffalo, Minn.; great-nephew C.A. Mayes of Orono, Minn.; and a host of other family members and friends who will love and remember her always.

The family will receive friends during the evening of Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the residence of Mrs. Parsons, 208 Oakwood Avenue, Hopewell, VA 23860. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at St. Johnâ??s Episcopal Church, with Father Bill Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Johnâ??s Episcopal Church.
