Luz Pena

May 22, 1959 — January 8, 2025

On May 22, 1959, the world was blessed with Luz Elizabeth Pena, in San Salvador, El Salvador. Born to Gloria Depaz and Felipe Pena, Luz was the second child after her brother, Sergio Felipe Pena. Sadly, on a January 8, 2025, Luz's bright light moved on from this world, leaving behind an ocean of love and memories.

At just 19, Luz embarked on a journey to Puerto-Prince, Haiti, where she met Edward George Leicht. Their union brought forth her beloved son, William Phillip Leicht. Luz's journey eventually led her to Baltimore, Maryland, and by 1983 she made Virginia her home, where she would meet Carlos Alvarado. From their love, her cherished daughter, Gloria Elizabeth Leicht, was born. In April 1997, Luz found a loving partner in Jose Garcia Lopez, and they wed on December 5, 2005, spending the rest of her years together until Luz reunited with her mother.

Luz was a formidable force, always standing firm for what she believed in and sharing her opinions freely. She was a beacon of empathy, always ready with a kind word or a listening ear. Luz's love for life was evident in her spur-of-the-moment road trips, music, dancing, and those cherished trips to Washington, DC, for the delicious pupusas on Washington St. Her dedication to her family was unwavering-working two jobs to ensure they had everything they needed.

Her role as a grandmother brought her unparalleled joy. Luz adored Melanie and Isabel Thompsen, Liam Rogers, Madison Leicht, and McKenzie Leicht. They were her source of happiness and pride, and Luz ensured they were surrounded by love and provided for in every way. An astute shopper with a keen eye for sales, Luz's zest for life was palpable.

Throughout her life, Luz demonstrated unyielding strength, courage, and resilience, even in the face of illness and hardship, always returning to her family with a loving smile. Luz leaves behind her children, grandchildren, husband, brother, nieces, nephews, and extended family, and friends too numerous to list.

While her radiant presence and beautiful smile are deeply missed, we find solace knowing Luz is in heaven, dancing with her beloved mother and watching over us. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched, and her legacy of love, strength, and generosity will continue to inspire us.

We love you forever, and you will always be in our hearts, Ma. Rest easy until we meet again.
