Magdalini George Flegas

June 1, 1939 — September 21, 2023

Magdalini G. Flegas, 84, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Thursday evening, September 21, 2023. She is finally resting peacefully and welcomed into her eternal home with God and reunited with her beloved husband, George Flegas.

Magdalini was born on June 1, 1939, in Agia Triada, Karpenissi, Greece to John and Elizabeth Giavos. She was raised by family friends, Stratos and Irene Fikas.

On July 16, 1961, she married the love of her life, George, and immigrated to United States and settled in Colonial Heights, VA. They raised three beautiful children and shared 22 years of married life together until George's passing in 1983.

Magdalini, who worked hard throughout her life as devoted homemaker, continued her passion for sewing in Greece and started a career as a seamstress with Weiss Department store until it's closing. Later, she reopened her husband's beloved restaurant, The Palms, in Petersburg, VA, until it closed in 2002. She was a dedicated member of St. Elpis Greek Orthodox Church in Hopewell, VA, where she volunteered in the Ladies Auxiliary and the annual Greek Festival.

She loved to bake her sought-after recipe for kourambiethes, and other Greek goodies to share with family and friends. Her home is decorated with beautiful handmade pieces of her ceramics, cross-stitched wall hangings, and sewn decorations. She enjoyed socializing with friends and the community of St. Elpis. Of everything in her life, she cherished her family, but by and large she loved being 'yiayia' to her eight grandchildren. Magdalini will be missed for her effervescent personality by all who knew and loved her.

Magdalini will be dearly remembered by her children, Athena "Tina" Hotchkiss (David), of Colonial Heights, Mary Galanopoulos (Nick), of Vineyard, NJ, and Chris Flegas (Anastasia), of Richmond; grandchildren, George, Eleni, Christos, Georgia, Magdalini, Zoe, Yorgos, and Alexandra; a brother, Panayiotis Giavos, of Lamia, Greece; many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Beside her parents, Magdalini is preceded in death by her husband, George Chris Flegas; her sisters, Hrisanthis Kambolis and Angelika Sampanis; and a brother, Kosta "Gus" Giavos, all of Greece.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 820 W. Broadway Avenue, Hopewell, with a Trisagion prayer service at 6:30 PM. The funeral service will take place Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at St. Elpis Greek Orthodox Church, 107 Memorial Avenue, Hopewell, VA, with her son-in-law, Father Nick Galanopoulos officiating. Interment will follow at Bermuda Memorial Park in Chester, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions in Magdalini's name to St. Elpis Greek Orthodox Church. Heartfelt thanks are extended to the family, friends, caregivers, staff, and hospice team who cared for Magdalini's needs and comfort in her final days.
