Major Jeter Sheffield, 75, of Ashland, VA passed away on December 5, 2014 at Hickory Hill Retirement Community in Burkeville, VA. Born in Petersburg, VA he was the son of the late Major Clixtoe and Mildred Farmer Sheffield; and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lemuel C. Sheffield and George Melvin Sheffield; and one sister, Marian Crumpler. Mr. Sheffield was a Lt. Col. in the Virginia Air National Guard as a fighter pilot. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1960 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as the Chief Engineer and later as the Vice President of Aerofin in Lynchburg with 20 plus years of service. He has also worked as the Eastern Regional Sales Manager for Marlo Coil. In 1984, Major founded Elliott & Associates in Ashland, VA. He was an avid saltwater fisherman, and especially enjoyed fishing in the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay. He is survived by his two children, Dwight Elliott Sheffield, Sr. and wife, Delores, and Pamela Sheffield Carraway and husband, Burney; seven grandchildren, Dwight Elliott Sheffield, Jr., Cecily Claire Sheffield, Major Gunnar Sheffield, Holly Kendall Sheffield, Hayden Council Carraway, Bryson Sheffield Carraway and Madelyn Paige Carraway; one nephew; and two nieces. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home. All other services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association.
