Malcolm O. Knowles, Sr., 74, of Stony Creek, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2015. He was the son of the late Woodrow O. and Carrie Storey Knowles. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Barbara Bray Knowles. He attended Petersburg High School where he was a football star. He was a 1959 graduate of Frederick Military Academy. He attended Frederick College on a football scholarship and was a three sport letterman. After turning down offers to play professional football, “Mac” worked for Brenco Incorporated and Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company. He retired from Brown & Williamson Tobacco and began a second career in law enforcement as a deputy in Sussex County. In 2005 he retired for a second time as a lieutenant and jail administrator from the Sussex County Sheriff’s department. After his second retirement, he dedicated his life to caring for his wife, Barbara, as she battled Alzheimer’s disease until her passing in 2010. He then turned his attention to caring for his mother, Carrie, until her 2012 passing. He was a member of the Blandford Masonic Lodge #3 for 49 years. Mac was a dedicated husband, father, caregiver, and provider. He is survived by his sons, Malcolm O. Knowles, Jr. of Colonial Heights and Dr. Chad A. Knowles and wife, Melanie of Chester. He is also survived by siblings: Steve Knowles (Kay) of Salvo, NC, Veronica Lindenmuth (Ed) of Enon, Robert Knowles (Debbie) of Dinwiddie, and Becky Drewry (David) of Southampton. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24. Interment will be in Southlawn Memorial Park.
