Margaret Sue Berryman passed away peacefully in her home on Chestnut Farm in Surry on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family, and her friend Laura Hamlin. Margaret was the wife of Joseph Sterling Perkinson who retired from Brown and Williamson in Petersburg. Born in Surry County she was the daughter of the late Gladys Wells Berryman and Joseph Shepard Berryman. She was well known for her activities in her native Surry County and various civic organizations. She was a proud co-founder of the Surry County Historical Society, and also a member of the Jamestowne Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, and the Wells Association. Within those organizations she held various posts and positions. She was instrumental in founding the Surry County Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Margaret was a member of the Surry County Planning Commission, and also participated as an appointed member to the Wet Lands Board. She retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation, and previously worked for the Richmond Department of Utilities, the Richmond National Bank, and the Dominion Power Company.
She is also survived by her brothers, Joseph W. Berryman, Benjamin R. Berryman and his wife Sandy; her nieces, Anne B. Justus, and Susan B. Landis and her husband, Jon, and her great niece, Amelia Anne Landis. She also is survived by her husbandâ??s children L. Gail Blaha and her husband, Charles, their daughter Amy Everett and her husband, Christopher, and their daughters Laine and Lexie, Jay S. Perkinson and his wife, Donna, and their sons Joseph and Craig, Brenda P. Criswell and her husband, David, and their daughter Ashley Whitehead and her children Samantha and Kyle, and Phillip E. Perkinson and his wife, Sheri. Margaret loved her extended family of cousins and her many friends, especially Avis, Rhonda, Julian, and her friend Helen Snowdeal in Maine.
A memorial service will be held in St. Paulâ??s Episcopal Church, Surry, on March 1, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with Rector Jim Browder officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Surry County Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Surry County Volunteer Fire Department, Surry County Historical Society, or the Surry County SPCA. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home to be placed in the church prior to the memorial service. The Purviance Chapel of J. T.
