Margaret Elaine Dabney

September 3, 1939 — August 1, 2022

Margaret Elaine Dabney, 82, of Hopewell, VA, died August 1, 2022.
Born and raised in Hopewell, VA, she was the daughter of the late Worley Lee Grammer and Margaret Denson Grammer. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who had an accomplished professional career, served as a volunteer for charities and non profits, and gave of her time freely to others.
While working full time and raising two daughters, she earned an Associates Degree in Accounting.

She retired as a Senior Contract Administrator for the Department of Defense. Her expertise and diligence managing and controlling supply contracts for troops, air and ground forces earned her the respect and love of her many coworkers, as well as numerous commendations and recognition during her 44 years of service.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and most notably, a sister in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. A member with perfect attendance for 30 years, she served in leadership roles often, held all offices and committee chairmanships, worked on all committees, often as the chief inspiration through her poetry. Elaine was a driving force behind many of the sorority functions benefiting the community and the organization. These relationships were among her most treasured.

She passionately supported the underserved through her volunteer work with ARC, Special Olympics, and the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind. She protected the defenseless through her support of the ASPCA, The Humane Society, Wounded Warriors and others.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Dabney was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Grammer. She is survived by her daughters Debra Paige Shutlock and her husband, John, of Louisa, Virginia and Tamara Collett Bunch and her husband, Rick, of Blythewood South Carolina; grandchildren, Jeremy Thruston of Fredricksburg, Donovan Marquez of New Mexico, Monique Marquez of Alabama, and Hope Shutlock of Maryland, Richard Bunch of Forest Acres, Taylor Bunch of Columbia, and Meg Garrido of Georgia; great-grandchild Braegan Garrido.

Those who knew her will miss her kindness and encouragement, and her joyful spirit.
