Margaret S. Whittle
Margaret Stuart Whittle passed away peacefully on October 17, 2018 at her residence in the Petersburg Home for Ladies. She was ninety-six.
Margaret (known to her friends as Margee) was the daughter of the late Dr. Robert Stuart and his wife Eve. She grew up in Bluefield, West Virginia. She attended Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg and studied to be a medical technologist at the University of Virginia. There, she met her future husband Dr. Joseph P. Whittle. They were married for a span of sixty-three years, until Dr. Whittle’s death in 2007,
Margee was a homemaker and mother with extensive volunteer interests, including the Red Cross, Boy Scouts and a long tenure as a Board member of the Petersburg Home for Ladies. She was a member of St. Paul’s Church in Petersburg for over seventy years. Margee was an avid tennis player and golfer. She loved to travel. She was an active member of both the Study Club and the Poplar Lawn Garden Club.
She is survived by her three children: daughter, Margaret Stuart Whittle; two sons, Robert L Whittle II and Joseph P. Whittle, Jr. and wife, Marti; five grandchildren: Lucy Whittle Goldstein, Lindsay Whittle Comstock, Joseph Scott Whittle, Emily Whittle Frost and Bryce Guy Norvell; and three great-grandchildren: Jane Stuart Goldstein, Caroline Crawford Whittle, and Joseph Landon Whittle.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Petersburg, VA on October 29 at noon with a reception and celebration of life following at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 110 Union Street, Petersburg, VA 23803 to the Joseph P. Whittle Fund for Music and the Arts, or to the Fellowship Fund c/o Petersburg Home for Ladies 311 S. Jefferson Street, Petersburg, VA 23803 in gratitude for the love and care she received while there.
