Maria Schafer Golden, 88, of Hopewell, widow of Earman Edward Golden, died Thursday, March 31, 2005 in John Randolph Medical Center. She was born in Jena, Germany and was the daughter of the late George Kurt and Marie Vorbach Shafer. She started the Hopewell congregation of the New Apostolic Church by having services in her home. She also volunteered for the Legal Aid Society in Petersburg and retired from Miller & Rhodes Department Store. She is survived by three children, Irene Zimny and husband, James, Sr. of Norfolk, Rita Johnston of Hopewell and Robert Golden and wife, Sharon of Prince George; five grandchildren, Robin Zimny and James Zimny, Jr. both of Miami, Erik Johnston and fiancée, Loura Davis of Hopewell, Troy Golden of Chester and Kallie Golden of Prince George; and one great-granddaughter, Ashley Johnston of Hopewell. The family will receive friends at the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service on Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the New Apostolic Church, Hopewell.
