Marie Nash Cotten, 97, of Petersburg, died peacefully at Southside Regional Medical Center, on Sunday, April 14, 2024, with Perry and Lisa at her side. Marie grew up in Colonial Heights and was the daughter of the late William Page Nash and Mattie Doss Nash.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Cotten Mason and her husband, Perry, of South Chesterfield, Virginia; and, her loving family of cousins that brought her joy throughout life. Marie is also survived by countless friends and extended family. She truly never knew a stranger and once you knew her, she was a friend.
After early schooling in Colonial Heights, Marie graduated Petersburg High School as President of the Class and "Best All Around Girl". She began working at Petersburg Savings and American Trust, where she quickly moved up the ranks to Vice President until she retired from working to devote herself full time to being a wife and mother. Marie enjoyed giving back to her community and served as President, Appomattox River Garden Club, and President, Petersburg Council of Garden Clubs. Later in life she was a member of the Magnolia Twig of Southside Regional Medical Center and served as President, Chaplain, and Treasurer on the Board of the SRMC Auxiliary.
Marie was a longtime faithful member at Monumental Baptist Church, in Petersburg, where she taught her beloved 5-year-olds in Sunday School for 62 years and served as Church Clerk for 43 years as well as faithfully chairing the Counting committee for many years. Later in life Marie was blessed with new church families at Immanuel Baptist Church, Colonial Heights and Second Chance Baptist Church, Petersburg. For the last 10 years, Marie faithfully supported Herby in Haiti through Compassion International.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home with interment to follow in Blandford Cemetery. Reverends Jerry Parker and Wayne Lowe will be officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 17, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
