Marie Birdsong Hawkins

Marie B. Hawkins of Colonial Heights, formerly of Ettrick, passed away on Monday, December 10, 2018 at Southside Regional Medical Center, after a period of declining health.
Born June 1, 1929, she grew up in Chester, Va. and graduated from Thomas Dale High School. She was the last survivor of her 5 brothers and sisters.
She was married in April of 1947 to Liebert E. Hawkins and resided most of her life in Ettrick.
She was employed by the C&P Telephone Co. (Verizon) from which she retired after many years of employment.
For over 50 years, Marie spent her summer weekends at the family cottage on the Chesapeake Bay in Deltaville, VA.
She was a member of Ettrick United Methodist Church and served as an officer of the UMW. Although Marie did not seek the spotlight, she generously gave her time and contributions to many individuals, charities, and organizations, including the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, SPCA, and Virginia Tech, where she and her husband have a scholarship in their names.
Marie enjoyed the arts, sewing, reading, cooking and entertaining, opening her house often to friends and family events.
She is survived by her son, Sterling L. Hawkins, of Colonial Heights and several nieces and nephews.
Interment will be private and held at a later date.
