Marie Kevan Spencer of Petersburg passed away on Monday, December 17, 2018. She was 97. Mrs. Spencer was a lifelong resident of Petersburg and was born at Petersburg General Hospital on December 8, 1921. She grew up on the 1600 block of Berkeley Ave in Petersburg and had fond memories of her childhood in Walnut Hill. She would laugh when she told of the delivery of ice for ice boxes (refrigerators were not common until the late 1920’s) and the great excitement it brought. The local children and dogs would chase the ice truck down Berkeley Ave (great fun Mrs. Spencer would laugh and say.) Mrs. Spencer attended Petersburg High School and graduated in 1937. She then attended William and Mary for one year. She married Frank Carter Spencer, Jr. in April of 1947 at St. Paul’s Church in Petersburg. The couple built a house on Crater Rd. in Walnut Hill and raised a family. The property would be sold years later to be used for Walnut Mall parking and the house was picked up and moved. Mrs. Spencer was a member of the Battlefield Park Swim Club for many years and spent many happy summers there talking to friends. She loved reading and checked out many a book from the Petersburg Public Library. Mrs. Spencer is survived by her son Frank Carter Spencer, III of Petersburg; grandchildren, Carol Ann Coburn and Walter Gordon Coburn, both of Newburn, NC; and other loving family members. Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by her parents, William Parham Kevan of Petersburg and Marie King Brown of Salem, MA; brother, William Parham Kevan, Jr. (Kevie), and her daughter, Ann Kevan Coburn. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 3, 2019 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Petersburg Home for Ladies or St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Condolences may be registered online at
