Martha Emerson Hughes

Martha Emerson Hughes, 106, of Hopewell, Virginia, passed away at Brighter Living Assisted Living on November 23, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. Martha was born in Dry Fork, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ernest J. Hughes, Sr.; parents, James and Dora Merricks Emerson; brothers, Glenn Emerson, Henry Emerson, John Emerson, James Emerson, and Edward Emerson; sisters, Fannie Bailey, Elva Cox, Mary Herndon, Dean Yeatts, Eva Riddle, Nellie Berry, Myrtle Casey, and Alice Emerson. She spent her life lovingly caring for others. She retired as a civil service employee from Defense General Supply Center, where she was a licensed parachute rigger, a skill of which she was very proud. She was a charter member of Liberty Baptist Church where she served as Hostess Committee Chair for many years. She is survived by her sons, Charles Hughes and his wife, Betty; Ernest Hughes, Jr. and his wife, Judy; grandsons, Russell "Rusty" Hughes and wife Debbie; Steven "Stevie" Hughes of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Ernest J. "Jay" Hughes, III. of Alexandria, Virginia; great-grandson, Charles S. "Chuckie" Hughes and wife, Heather, and great-granddaughter, Melanie Hughes; great-great-grandsons, Robert Chase Hughes, Cody Moore, Richard "Trip" Moore, and Bailey Hughes; and one brother, George Emerson. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 27th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 28th, at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Reverend Phil Andrews officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, Virginia. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Brighter Living Assisted Living, the Pastor and members of Liberty Baptist Church, and the caregivers of At Home Care Hospice for their love, devotion, support and encouragement to her and to the family.
