Martin Parks Burks of Petersburg, Virginia passed away on Tuesday morning, July 24, at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg. His family was by his side. He was 59 years old, and now he is free.
A memorial service for Marty will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to First Baptist Church of Petersburg, PO Box 445, Petersburg, Virginia, 23804.
Marty was born on September 24, 1958, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the youngest son of Edward Calohill Burks and Gertrude Fischer Burks.
Marty leaves behind a brother, Edward Calohill Burks Jr., and Edward’s wife, Margaret Gallalee Burks; a sister, Kate Elizabeth Litton, and her partner, Robert Joseph Sporysz Jr.; a niece, Kendall Lee Litton; and three nephews: Ryan Donald Edward Litton, Edward Calohill Burks III, and John Blacksher Burks.
Marty was preceded in death by his mother and father and by his brother, Timothy Parks Burks.
Marty also leaves behind cherished and steadfast friends at First Baptist Church of Petersburg and at his AA group, who stood with him through his many struggles and let their love shine on him even when the darkness threatened to overwhelm him. To Pastor Rob, to Lucy, to Betty, to his AA sponsor, and to all the others who held him close, Marty’s family will be forever grateful. Love is God’s greatest gift to the world, and your love let you see him for what he really was.
And what was Marty really? He was compassionate, he was generous, he was endlessly creative, and he was relentlessly curious about the world. He loved to learn and he loved to share what he learned. He deeply loved and cared for his family and friends, and he always reached out to them with cards and calls.
He was an artist, an inventor, a photographer, a filmmaker, and thinker of a distinctly unconventional kind. He lived his life imperfectly, to be sure. But he lived it on his own terms. Independently. And through all his pain and troubles, he kept his childish innocence to the end.
Marty is earthbound no more. He is with God in heaven, along with his mom, and his dad, and his brother Tim. And, Lord, we know in our hearts that he is finally free. He is finally home.
