Marvin Lemuel Duke, Jr., 87, of Dinwiddie, VA, a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, died Sunday, October 15, 2017. Born in Southampton County, VA, he was the son of the late Marvin Lemuel and Martha Galtress Duke. He was also preceded in death by a son, Charles Wayne “Hoss” Duke and a sister, Evelyn D. Gregory. Mr. Duke was a longtime member of Smyrna Baptist Church where he served in numerous capacities. He also served as Moderator for the Petersburg Baptist Association. Following his service as a Trooper with the Virginia State Police, he owned and operated an insurance agency. He was very active in civic and community affairs, and in recent years helped organize the group known as B.O.P (Beautiful Older People.) He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Huntus Kitchen Duke; son, Steven A. Duke and wife, Carol; daughter, Belinda D. Pillow and husband, Shawn; daughter-in-law, Shella H. Duke, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara D. Gilliland; brother, Winston Duke; sisters-in-law, Eunice K. Britt and Jackie K. Sullivan. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Smyrna Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Rowland and the Rev. Aaron Bobo officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at Smyrna.
