Marvin Levy, age 85, died December 10, 2010, in Richmond, Virginia, from a sudden heart attack. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on December 12, 2010, at J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home at the Petersburg Chapel on 103 S. Adams St., Petersburg, Virginia.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on December 13, 2010, with a burial following at the Brith Achim Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia, with the Rabbi Dennis Beck-Berman officiating.
Marvin Levy was born on October 29, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Harry and Lillian Schaeffer Levy. His parents preceded him in death as well as both his siblings, sisters Bea Baxter and Joyce Shapiro. Also preceding him in death was his nephew Richard Baxter; and his first wife Dorothy Levy.
Surviving family members include his wife of thirty two years, Virginia Blanton Levy, his son and wife, Farrell and Laura Levy, and his two granddaughters, Rachel and Carolyn Levy. He also leaves his nephew Alan Baxter, M.D., and cousins Sid Schaeffer and his wife Marlene, and Morris Schaeffer and his wife Debbie.
Marvin Levy as a young man was signed to play minor league baseball in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but when World War II broke out, he then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served during 1943 to 1946 for the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper. He jumped the Rhine River into Germany on March 24, 1945. After the war he served as a guard for General Dwight Eisenhower. Marvin was the owner of Farrellâ??s from 1977 to 2010, located in Hopewell and Chester, Virginia. He was a member of the Congregation Brith Achim of Petersburg, Virginia where he served on the board of directors for many years. He was an avid golfer and in October enjoyed a four day golf trip with his friends playing eighteen holes each day. Donations may be made to the Dream Connection, Inc., P.O. Box 10924, Knoxville, TN 37939, an organization that fulfills dreams of children with life threatening illnesses that Mr. Levyâ??s son helped found in 1985.
