Mary Richardson Butterworth
Mary was born November 11, 1906 to Pauline Harris and Arthur Edward Richardson in the Petersburg Hospital, an unusual occurrence for the time. She was raised in Dinwiddie County with her brothers, Arthur Harris Richardson and John Yulee (Brux) Richardson. For a long time she was the only girl amongst her brothers and many boy cousins.
Long before Title IX she attended Westhampton College on a basketball scholarship and was elected Captain of the team for her last two years. She also played field hockey, a sport that was new to her. She made life-long friends and treasured her time there.
After graduation she returned to Dinwiddie County to teach school for several years while she was waiting for her future husband Dr. Reynoldson Duke Butterworth to finish his medical training in Orthopaedics. After they married they settled in Richmond and raised their two daughters, Mary Harris Butterworth Langwell and Ann Reynoldson (Renny) Butterworth Cave.
Mary did volunteer work at the old Johnston-Willis Hospital and was a faithful member of Reveille Methodist Church. She belonged to the Jamestowne Society, the Tuckahoe Woman’s Club, the Country Club of Virginia and the Commonwealth Club. After her husband’s death she moved to Westminster-Canterbury Richmond where she lived for 34 years. While there she knit hundreds of hats for the Christmas Mother and always took her special baked custard to any of her friends who were in Health Care.
Mary was lucky enough to celebrate two different birthdays on 11-11-11, her 5th and her 105th. She loved to travel and she loved her family (which often included people who were not actually related to her). She died on May 12, 2014 and will be buried Monday, May 19th at 2 p.m. in the family cemetery at her beloved “Ridgeway” 14144 Boydton Plank Rd., Dinwiddie, VA 23841
She is survived by her daughter Renny Cave and son-in-law Boyd Cave, granddaughters Kathryn Langwell, Sarah, Muffy and Caroline Cave, grandson Reyn Langwell, great-grandchildren Maggie and Max Onsager, Renny and Charles Ball, and many nieces and nephews.
