Mary Gretchen Hegamyer Corsentino 80, of Richmond, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in her home surrounded by her children. She was born the daughter of the late Roland and Mary Hegamyer.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Chris Hegamyer, and one sister, Helen Beck.
Mary Gretchen attended St. Elizabeth grade school and St. Gertrude High School and graduated
in 1952. On July 4th 1953 she married the love of her life, Leonard John Corsentino. Together they raised five children and were the grandparents of nine.
For many years, Mary was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Petersburg, VA where she had many close friends. When her husband died she moved to Richmond and became a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church. She renewed friendships with her high school friends, the “Gertie Girls,” and shared many good times with them.
Mary Gretchen traveled the world with her husband and always had lots of interesting tales to tell of their journeys and adventures. She loved music and sang in the St. Joseph’s choir for many years, and later joined The Heartstrings and sang with them throughout Richmond. You could always hear her
humming as she went about her day to day business.
A kind, gentle woman, she was happiest when she was with her entire family on their annual beach trip to the Outer Banks or when everyone was together for joyous Christmas celebrations. A lover of life, she always saw the funny side of things and taught her children to enjoy laughter, and how to laugh at themselves the most.
Mary Gretchen is survived by her five children: John Corsentino, Chris Corsentino (Dena), Peggy Corsentino Hobson (Bruce), Betsy Corsentino James, and Stephanie Corsentino Hooper. She also leaves nine grandchildren: Jessi Corsentino Carrowiano (Chris), Kasey Corsentino, Johnny Corsentino, Alexis Corsentino, Andy Hobson, Brian Hobson, Sammy Hooper, Lacey Hooper, and Daisy Hooper. In addition, she leaves behind brother Michael Hegamyer, many nieces and nephews, and dear family friend Mac Porter.
The family would like to thank all of her friends for the visits, cards and love they gave during our mother’s illness, as well as the nurses at St. Mary’s Hospital and Bon Secours Hospice for their gentle, invaluable support.
A Wake Service will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014 at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Petersburg, VA, at 6 PM with a visitation to follow until 8PM. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11AM Friday, May 9, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Petersburg, VA. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
