Our Lord must have needed another quilter on September 8, 2020 as He called his servant Mary Avery Elder of Prince George, Va. to her place in glory. Mary is preceded in death by her parents J.R. Avery and Maude Avery, her sisters Ethel Blankenship, Francis Fry and a brother Junny Avery, her husband Harvey (Bill) Elder, son Neil Elder and daughter in law Marijo Elder. Mary is survived by her sister Dorothy Hussey, son Gibby Elder (Pam) and daughter Patsy Stuard (Pat). Her grandchildren Kendell Yates (Charlie), Adam Elder (Melissa, Elana) and Amy Elder Smith. Great-grandchildren Haley Yates, Peyton Yates and Kristian Yates (Ashton), Caitlyn Elder (Jeff), Barry Smith III as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will be remembered in our hearts by her willingness to share her talents with others and her love of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter. All in the family have numerous pieces of her handwork that she made with her loving hands. She was an outstanding cook and shared that talent with her children for their future use. She loved to take her grandchildren to Lake Gaston years ago and their ability to ski came from her willingness to pull them behind her pontoon boat. She will be greatly missed, and we will hold her memory in our hearts. The family will receive friends Friday, September 18, 2020 from 5pm to 7pm at J.T. Morriss & Son Hopewell Chapel. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 19, 2020 11a.m at the chapel. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Sycamore United Methodist Church 9710 Old Stage Road, Prince George, Va. 23875. Condolences can be registered online at
