Mary Eupha Gibson

Aunt Eupha to many, Gibby to others, Mary Eupha Gibson was promoted to glory on Sunday, October 16, 2005. She was never married, choosing to dedicate her life to Christian service. She glorified God with 39 years of service as an officer in the Salvation Army and continued to serve others through Christ during her 26 years of retirement. As Director of family welfare for the Salvation Army?s Washington Corps, she served with a Christian compassion; making life bearable for the area?s poorest and overlooked. In a 1977 Washington Post article Eupha said ?The Salvation Army has given me many opportunities, from the slums of Washington to being received at the White House by First Ladies Johnson, Eisenhower, Truman and Eleanor Roosevelt?, for whom she was sometimes mistaken. The Gibson family shares a unique closeness, where loving, sharing and caring for one another is a way of life. Eupha touched each person she came in contact with and her family was no exception. Her Christian love and compassion showed everyday. She was a child of God. She is survived by two brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; 18 nieces and nephews; 47 great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army Petersburg Corps at 1228 S. West St., Petersburg, VA 23805. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
