Mary Gill

Mary Marable Land Gill, 103, of Petersburg, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Southside Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Carter and Cornelia Spratley Land, husband Raymond Willis Gill and siblings Edwin Land, Lewis Land, Henry Carter Land, Jr., Dillard Land, Robert Hunt Land, Connie Hardenbergh and Warren Williams. Mary graduated from the College of William & Mary in 1928 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She later received her Masters from UVA in 1965. Mary was an active member of various civic and philanthropic organizations, which included the March of Dimes, Heart Fund, Petersburg Forum, Contact, Easter Seals, Petersburg Womenâ??s Club, Richard Bland Foundation Board, Petersburg School Board, William & Mary Alumni Association, Petersburg Country Club, Cockade City Garden Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma Teaching Sorority. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Mary Land Wright and husband, Les; Hall Hardenbergh and wife, Frances; Susan W. Bruce and husband, Frank; Carter L. Hardenbergh and wife, Melissa; Tom Williams and wife, Anne; E.C. Land; Betsy Lewis and husband, Jim; Bob Williams and wife, Barbara; Carter Land and wife, Ann; Charles Land and wife, Margaret, and Caroline Whalen and husband, Jerry; step-daughter, Mildred Williamson and her sons, Jimmy and Ray Williamson and their families; numerous great nieces and nephews who include, Van Hardenbergh and Les Wright. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service from 6 to 8:00 pm. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Blandford Cemetery. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church, 235 W.
