Mary Chialmas Rabel went home to the Lord on Jan. 5, 2009. She was the daughter of the late George and Mabel Chialmas and was preceded in death by her son, George Rabel, and her grandsons, Michael Nichols and Stephen Hailey.
She is survived by her loving husband, August Tex Rabel; and devoted friend, Bob Horne.
She attended Saint Joseph School and so did three generations of her children and grandchildren. She graduated from Petersburg High School and Smith Dale Massey College. She was a Red Cross volunteer during World War II. She was the owner of Busy Bee, Denoâ??s and Sanitary Restaurants of Petersburg and Red Hill Grocery Store.
Mary was a beloved mother and grandmother of her three daughters, Mary Nichols Martin and her husband, John; Jackie Arney Johnson and her husband, Russell Johnson; and Shirley Horne; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She enjoyed life, going places and people especially visits with Sister James Regina and Sister Lucille Baker with Sisters of Charity.
Her Mass will be celebrated by Father Steve at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at St. Joseph Church, Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Saint Joseph Outreach Program.
