Mary Price Slate, age 91, a native and long-time resident of Petersburg, has departed this life on Saturday, June 4th, 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Jerome and Carrie Ross Price, eight siblings, and her husband, Captain Irby E. Slate Jr., of the Petersburg Police Department. Mrs. Slate was a faithful, long-term employee of Titmus Optical Company, retiring at age 65. She was a lifelong member of Second Baptist Church in Petersburg and one of its oldest living members. She served in many areas of church life, touching all those around her, and continued her membership and support after her move to Elizabethtown, Kentucky in 2000, where she resided at Helmwood Assisted Living and Healthcare Centers. She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Paul Smith of Stanley, North Carolina, Eleanor and C. A. Brown of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and Rebecca and Gerard Francois of Springfield, Virginia; her five grandchildren, Steven Snead-Smith and wife Jennifer of Richmond, Virginia, Scott Smith and wife Cindy of Pine Tops, North Carolina, David Smith of Angier, North Carolina, Elizabeth Brown of Elizabethtown Kentucky and David-Christopher Francois and fiancée, Cristina Camporesi of Durham, North Carolina; three great grandchildren, Kaylee, Christopher and Ashleigh Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her sweet presence will be sorely missed, but her spirit will remain among us always. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Cremation Service Tuesday, June 7th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, and on Wednesday, June 8th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, following the chapel visitation. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery. Flowers are welcome or memorial gifts can be made to Second Baptist Church, 3355 Johnson Rd, Petersburg, 23805.
