Mary Lucille Drummond Slaughter, "Nanny", went home to Heaven Monday, June 8, 2015. She was 103 years old. She was born the year the Titanic sank, the year New Mexico and Arizona became states, the year Girl Scouts of America was founded, and the year Taft was President (she has seen 18 Presidents). She was 2 years old when WWI began and she was 17 when the Great Depression began. She touched many lives and was loved by everyone who met her. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Alex Drummond and Alice Belle Hopkins Drummond; sister, Alice Mae Greene; and 2 brothers, Otis Drummond and Johnny Lee Drummond. She was married for 40 years to the late John Alvin "Al" Slaughter, Sr. She is survived by her only child, John Alvin Slaughter, Jr.; three grandchildren, John Alvin Slaughter, III, Sharon Slaughter Traylor and Eric Scott Slaughter, Sr. and his wife Lesa; her loving sister, Mildred Davis of Hopewell; devoted care giver, Margaret Wolfe; five great-grandchildren, John Alvin Slaughter, IV, James Slaughter, Alex Traylor, Eric Scott Slaughter, Jr., and Emily Slaughter; three great-great grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kendall and Lexi; and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home from 6- 8 PM, Thursday, June 11, 2015. A funeral service will be conducted at Powers Memorial Baptist Church in Hopewell on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 12:00 P.M. Burial will follow at Merchant's Hope Cemetery.
