Mary Sowards Stewart, 78, of Alliance Road in Surry, died Tuesday, January 12, 2010. She was born on April 30, 1931 in Hurricane, WV, the daughter of the late Everette W. and Marie McCallister Sowards. She was also predeceased by her step-mother, Frances Blake Sowards.
She was married for 59 years to the late Nicholas Washington Stewart and is survived by two sons, Robert T. Stewart and his wife, Margo of Smithfield, and J. Earl Stewart of Surry; a daughter, Carol S. Berryman and her husband, Stuart of Surry; a brother William T. Sowards and his wife, Ann of Disputanta; a sister, Jean Goodrich of Smithfield; seven grandchildren, Tracy, Bryan, Kathy, Cyndi, Michael, Joshua, Jeremiah; seven great grandchildren, Amber, Stephen Jr., Nicholas, Danielle, Dakota, Mikaela and Will; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was a charter member of the Church of the Nazarene in Smithfield and she was a world class Momma and cook. Momma always made sure her family was full and happy. She will be sorely missed and forever in the hearts of her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will always remember their beloved â??Begga.â?
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Purviance Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Wakefield by Rev. Ray Rowland Rev. Gary Ross. Burial will follow in the Union Church Cemetery in Dendron. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-8PM and at other times at the residence at 1480 Alliance Rd. in Surry. Memorial donations may be made to Surry Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 188, Surry, VA 23883 and Surry Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 260, Surry, VA 23883.
