Mary Bowling Unger, 93, beloved wife of the late Raymond Ben Unger, Sr., longtime resident of Petersburg, Virginia and most recent resident of Chesterfield, Virginia, passed away peacefully at Chippenham Medical Center on Tuesday, March 27, 2012. Born March 4, 1919 in Amherst County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Bessie Lee and George Monroe Bowling.
In the 1940â??s and 50â??s, Mary was employed with the Signal Corp at Fort Lee, Virginia and later extensively volunteered her time with community outreach programs, including Welcome Wagon of Petersburg, Hospital Candy Stripers, Voter Registration and other civic organizations. In retirement, she worked with her husband operating Battlefield Park Swim & Racquet Club. She was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and active in the community through involvement with the Retired Officers Association and Lionesses Club. Most of all, she was devoted to her husband and the loving care of her family. She is very missed.
Mary Unger was preceded in death by three brothers, George Albert Bowling and William T. Bowling both of Chesterfield, VA, and Edward Warren Bowling of Colonial Heights, VA. Mary is survived by her children, Judy K. Martin, Peggy M. Higgins, Larry Joe Unger, and Raymond B. Unger, Jr.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Madge B. McCants of Mooresville, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. (Christian wake service at 6:30 p.m.) Friday, March 30th at St. Joseph Catholic Church. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, at the church, with Father Jay Biber, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park.
