Mary Johnson Weaver, 85, of Chester, VA, died August 12, 2024. Born and raised in Newport News, VA, she was the daughter of Vivian and Melville Johnson; and baby sister to Melville Jr. and Roberts (Bob) Johnson. Growing up, she especially loved spending summers on the water, and talked often of swimming and boating with her friends and family. She was a loving wife, married to Monte Weaver for 64 years; and a devoted mother to Mary Beth, Monty, and John; and committed grandmother to Rachel and Beth. Mary graduated in 1961, from William & Mary, majoring in education, and started out as an elementary teacher in Raleigh, North Carolina. In Chester, she initially served as a substitute teacher for the county, before operating as the clinic aide for Thomas Dale High School. She was an active member of her church, Chester Presbyterian Church, where she gained renown for her baking skills - some members used to jump out of their cars to get to her cakes before they were gone. Mary loved playing cards in her bridge club, reading, and travelling with her husband, Monte, going on monumental road trips through Europe, Canada, and the Pacific Northwest. She especially loved children and supported them in her church's After School Tutoring program, as well as, serving as a band booster, Junior High Youth Group leader, Den Mother, Swim Team helper, and cheering multiple high school football and soccer games. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm, on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Chester Presbyterian Church.
