Mary Agnes Zappulla, 93, died April 19, 2015. She was born November 30, 1921, in Duplin County, North Carolina. She was the oldest of seven daughters of the late Fennell and Rillie Williams Brown. She was predeceased by her husband, Sebastian Zappulla; son, Michael Vincent Zappulla; sisters, Doris Frederick, Madeline Vann, and Iris Savage. Mary lived in Petersburg for many years and worked with her husband operating the Blue Star Restaurant from the early sixties into the seventies. She also sold Stanley Home Products. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Crater View Baptist Church. Mary was outgoing and independent and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and keeping house until she became limited by end stage renal disease and moved to Dunlop House in Colonial Heights. Mary is survived by her son, Gerald D. Zappulla and wife Mary of King George, their children and grandchildren; daughter, Mary Ann Dennis and husband Bob of Hampstead, N.C., their children and grandchildren; sisters, Edna Adkins of Prince George, Thelma Jones of Rose Hill, N.C., and Dorothy Powell of Rocky Point, N.C.; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. The family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will take place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
