Mattie Bell Holland, 92, a former resident of Petersburg, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Lake Sherwood Village of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A native of Lancaster, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Claude & Theo Williams. She was also preceded in death by her husband, LT COL Jack Gradon Holland, U.S. Army (retired), and her brothers, John Williams and Ward Williams. She served her country as a U. S. Army nurse of the Nurse Corps during World War II, entering March 01, 1945. Mattie completed her training at Camp Rucker (Alabama) and Ft. Benning (Georgia). She was discharged as First Lieutenant at Ft. Benning, Georgia on February 04, 1947, serving 22 months. Mattie received the Victory Ribbon and the American Theatre Ribbon. Mattie is survived by her daughter, Claudia Calverley; her grandson, Steven Calverley; her granddaughter, Jennifer Hildebrand; her great-granddaughter, Adlynn Hildebrand; and her brother, Ira Williams. A graveside funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 7th at Southlawn Memorial Park.
