Matyas John Cizler

Matyas John Cizler, 98, of Petersburg passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2021. Born January 2, 1923, he was the son of the late Matyas Cizler and Annie Piecek Cizler, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Marie Vesely Cizler; and two sisters, Catherine Cizler Benda and Vicki Cizler Siemek; and six half-siblings. A lifetime parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Petersburg, Matyas was very active with many church functions. He was a former President of the Hopewell Moose Lodge and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his loving daughters, Janice Clark and husband, Steve, Cheryl Cizler; three grandchildren, Nancy Cours and husband, Steve, Colt Deitz and wife, Alice, Clint Deitz; four great-grandchildren, Hannah and William Cours, Caroline and Jackson Deitz; nephew, John Blaha and his family; nieces, Michelle Tiedeken, Sharon Kidd, Vicky Holland and their families; and other extended family members. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Mr. Cizler’s caretakers, Rachel Harvell, Vanessa Tolbert, Helen Jones and Joyce Blowe for their extraordinary care during his time in need. A funeral mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 151 W Washington St, Petersburg, VA 23803. A private interment will be held at Southlawn Memorial Park at a later date. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at church.
