Maurice Robin Harris Jr

Maurice Robin Harris, Jr., 94, of Chester, Virginia, formerly of VA Beach, Virginia, died May 8, 2014 at Retreat Doctor’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He was born on February 12, 1920 in Norfolk, Virginia the fourth child of Maurice Robin and Sadie Eason Harris. He lived in South Norfolk, (Chesapeake) Virginia until he was drafted into the Army in 1942. He served during World War II from 1942-1945 in the U.S. 6th Army in the South Pacific. He was awarded three Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star. Upon his return from the War, he married Billie Virginia Taylor in 1946, she preceded him in death in 1981. Maurice retired from the Ford Assembly Plant in Norfolk in 1985. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father who raised him, Alonzo “Lonnie” Hanbury; a brother, Clarence Harris; two sisters, Christine Harris and Lucille Sawyer; and two nephews, Wayne and Frank Sawyer. He is survived by one son, Jack Harris (Linda) of Chester, VA; three grandchildren, Christopher Harris (Jennifer) of Chester, VA, Jason Harris (April) of Lexington, VA, and Alane Redmond (Vince) of Chester, VA; eight great- grandchildren; one half-brother, A. Lee Hanbury, Jr. of Chester, VA; one nephew, Randall Harris of Chesapeake, VA; and one niece, Brenda Jones of Mclean, VA. Maurice was an avid fisherman with a wonderful outlook on life who deeply cared for his family. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2014 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA with Military Honors.
