Melvin Guy Gregory, 77, left us on March 28, 2024, with family by his side, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, in Blackstone, VA.
His nickname there was "The Candy Man," as he would go around in his wheelchair passing candy out to staff and fellow residents.
Melvin was born on November 10, 1946, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to Boyd Lee Gregory, Sr. and Pearl Messer Gregory. He is preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Boyd Lee Gregory, Jr., Walter H. Gregory, Wallace C. Gregory, Sr., Henry C. Gregory, Earl S. Gregory, and George T. Gregory, Sr.; one sister, Brenda G. Nugent.
He is survived by his sister, Shirley G. Hughes; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Melvin joined the Army and served two tours in the Vietnam War with Honors. His career was that of a carpenter and construction worker.. He loved to read western books by Louis L'Amour and Willam W. Johnstone. He loved music, his favorite bluegrass band is Blue Highway. He loved playing cards, Spades and Hearts. Melvin was a very kind, sweet, giving, and loving person.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 26, 2024, at 3 p.m., at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia.
