Michael Chermak, 96, of Chester, formerly of Hopewell passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2004. Mr. Chermak was born February 26, 1908 in McMechen, West Virginia. He married the late Anna Sodomka Chermak on November 18, 1941. They shared a joyous marriage of 58 years until her death on March 12, 2000. Mr. Chermak served in World War II with Company āCā, 45th Armored Medical Battalion, Third Armored Division. He attained the rank of First Sgt and was credited for service in battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. After an honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. Chermak worked at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC for 28 years, retiring in 1969. He is survived by a sister, Susan Chermak Sodomka of Hopewell, nieces and nephews, Andrew Chermak of Houston, TX, Stan Sodomka of Charlottesville, VA, Roberta Sodomka Rucker of Newport News, Fred Sodomka of Great Falls, MT, Donald and Betty Lewis of Hopewell and Linda Whippo of Richmond. He had a lifelong friend in his brother-in-law, Frank Sodomka of Hopewell. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 11, 2004 from 3:00 to 5:00PM in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss 7 Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Monday, July 12, 2004 at 10:00AM in the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ron Bullis officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, VA.
