Dr. Michael Joseph Flaherty died on August 21, 2004 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina while vacationing with his family. He was born September 19, 1933, in New York City and was the son of Catherine Maloney Flaherty and Michael Joseph Flaherty.

He came to Hopewell 37 years ago to join the medical practice of Dr. Norman Wyatt. In 1970 he became a full time Assistant Professor of Medicine at The Medical College of Virginia and McGuire Veterans Hospital. In 1982 he opened a private hematology and oncology practice in Hopewell, which he maintained until his retirement in 1999.

He was a graduate of Fordham University and Seton Hall Medical College. He completed his internal medicine residency in Harrisburg, PA, and his hematology residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. He served in the Chemical Corps of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years M. Joan Murphy Flaherty and his four children: Lynn Flaherty Dommel and husband Paul of McLean, VA, Michelle Flaherty Gervasini and husband Michael of Annandale VA, Michael Joseph Flaherty of Richmond, VA, and Thomas John Flaherty of McLean, VA, and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Ann Delvecchio and two nieces.

A Rosary will be recited on Friday, August 27th at 7 p.m. in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son with visitation to follow until 8:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be said on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at 11 am in St. James Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be in Appomattox Cemetery.
