Mildred Frances Burrell, 73, of Richmond died Sunday, July 18, 2004. She was the daughter of the late Frank John and Annie Wheelhouse Fried and was also predeceased by a brother, William Thomas Burrell. Mildred was the 2nd woman to be hired at Allied Chemical and retired with over 40 years of service. She was an avid softball player, coach and director. She started the Virginia Belles Softball team in 1972 and coached them to their first Women’s National Championship Title in 1975. She volunteered many, many hours of her time as the President of the Girls Chesterfield Youth Softball Association for over 10 years. She worked at the local and national level for the United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association for over 25 years. She has been inducted into numerous state Softball Halls of Fame across the country for her leadership and direction to girls youth softball. She was also elected to the National USSSA Hall of Fame in 1997. Kids were the apple of Mildred’s eye and in her eyes all of the kids were all-stars. She is survived by two brothers, Frank J. Fried, Jr. and Robert C. Fried both of Prince George; three nephews, Johnny Fried, Robbie Fried and Mike Fried; a niece, Cindy Schrader; great-nephews, Dallas, Ryan and Andrew Fried; great nieces, Courtney Schrader, Brooke Fried and Megan Fried; two very special friends, Shirley Jackson and Helen Wall; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Felker, pastor of Swift Creek Baptist Church, Bishop Walter Parker, USSSA associate, and Dane Lewis, special friend, officiating. Interment will follow at St. John Catholic Church Cemetery, Dinwiddie. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
