Mildred Stansbury

d. February 28, 2011

Stansbury, Mildred Leah Kreiter
Born September 22, 1912 in Houston, Texas. Passed away February 28, 2011 to join James, her husband of 65 years. Survived by son, James III (Barbara) Waverly, VA, daughter, Linda , Greensboro, NC, two grandchildren, Jeffrey Miller (Jennifer) and Cristal Stansbury Crosby (Blake); 5 great-grandchildren; Sally and Jeffrey Miller, Brandon, Ethan and Zachary Crosby; sister, Dorothy Frey, Los Angeles, CA and sister-in-law Mary Butera, Sopchoppy, FL.

Many changes happened during Mildredâ??s 98 years. She was born when Houston had dirt roads and horses outnumbered cars. She was one of 4 girls in an upper middle class family where tennis, golf, swimming and bridge were early interests. Flying was added in the 1930s when fewer than 500 women were aviators. She was treasurer of the Womenâ??s Aeronautical Society of Houston. Millie was a working woman long before it was commonplace; serving in the office of her fatherâ??s industrial machine business spanning part of the Great Depression. She attended the Massey Business College in Houston TX and studied advertising art with Meyer-Booth and fashion illustration with â??We Modernsâ? in Houston. Art was a lifelong passion. She married in 1943 to become an Army officerâ??s wife and mother of two. She settled in Petersburg, after following her husband around the world for 20 years. Her earliest Army move was to Okinawa with the first post-WWII military families. She traveled to that war scarred island with its primitive living conditions alone by troop ship and with a toddler in tow.

Locally she was a member of the Lions Club of Prince George, Petersburg Art League, the American Red Cross, Petersburg Garden Club and Faith Lutheran Parish. Over the years she was an active volunteer with the Petersburg Hospital Twig Shop and the Boy and Girl Scouts. She kept active with a group of retired military and local friends.
