Milton Ryland Gleason, Sr., 84, of Prince George, Virginia, died on June 20, 2024. Born and raised in Hopewell, VA. He was the son of the late Douglas Thomas Gleason and Ruby Piercy Gleason.
He graduated from Hopewell High School Class of 1957. During his High School years playing baseball on a winning team, fishing and duck hunting on the Appomattox River, he still managed to carry newspapers with his mother's help folding and loading them into his bicycle basket. Through his Senior year at H.H.S he carried the newspapers. He never forgot the names and addresses of his customers. In later years he was the telephone repairman for some customers who called for phone service. Milton had lifetime friends who were in the Sigma Tau Phi Fraternity while in high school.
His working career began after high school with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company (C&P).He retired from AT&T as a Systems Technician in 1989. He remains a supporter of the Pioneers (Telephone) - Volunteers Network.
Family vacations at Outer Banks, N.C. was a family tradition beginning in the 1960's. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed many years fishing with his 'fishing buddies' in Deltaville, VA from the boat ,"Sea Gull". Horseshoes and Pool were his special activities.
Playing the guitar and singing with his two brothers and family and friends on anytime occasions. These were special times with the grandchildren. He was "Papa Dew". In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Jerry Douglas Gleason and Roy Thomas Gleason (Barbara); his father-in-law, Gordon Levoy Monk; mother-in-law, Eloise Turnes Monk; his sister-in-law, Sandra Monk Yeckley (David); and his brother-in-law, Ronnie Lee Powers.
Milton is survived by his wife, Marilyn Monk Gleason, of 64 years of marriage. He is survived by daughter, Melodee Gleason Redenius (Scott); one son, Milton Ryland Gleason, Jr. (Jean), of Prince George, VA; two granddaughters, Bridget Jenkins Jarratt (Clifton), of Prince George, VA and Rachel Gleason Milstead (Lamar), of Maryland; grandson, Milton Ryland Gleason III; great-grandson, Zachary Ethan Lockhart; two great-granddaughters, Luna Eloise Milstead and Lenora Effie Milstead; one sister, Jewel Gleason Powers, of Prince George, VA; one brother-in-law, Bruce Levoy Monk (Helen), of Chester, VA; one sister-in-law, Kay Gleason, of Hopewell, VA; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM, followed by a service at 1:00 PM, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Alex Roberts and Rev. Wayne Henry officiating.
Interment will follow at Bermuda Memorial Park in Chester, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Post 637 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hopewell, VA.
