Morris Carter Murphy born March 18, 1923 in Madison County, Kentucky passed away peacefully on May 28, 2011 after an extended illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Louise Murphy, two sons Carter Lewis (Gloria) and Morris Lynn (Karla), one daughter Karen Friedhaber (Marc), five grandchildren, Teresa Murphy Andress (Mike), Andrea Murphy Weeks (Stephen), Michael Friedhaber, Cole Murphy, Tucker Murphy and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Dudley and Jimmy Murphy and a sister, Bettie Warren.

Carter served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky. He retired from the Petersburg Public Schools after a 40 year distinguished career as a teacher, principal, and administrator. In 1987 he was awarded the Outstanding Vocational Educator of the Year by the Virginia Vocational Association.

He was active in many civic and professional organizations too numerous to list. In 1993 he received the Distinguished Service Award and also the Lifetime Achievement Award for Devoted Community Service from the Petersburg Rotary Club. Carter served in many church leadership roles all of his adult life. At the time of his death he was a member of Second Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held at the Second Baptist Church at 1 oâ??clock on Wednesday, June 1 followed by a funeral service at 2 oâ??clock with internment at Southlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Second Baptist Church at 3355 Johnson Road, Petersburg, VA 23805.
