Morton "Pete" L. Conwell, Jr.

December 29, 1924 — June 2, 2015

Morton Lee “Pete” Conwell, Jr., 90, of Colonial Heights, passed away June 2, 2015. Born in Stony Creek, Virginia, he was the son of the late Morton Lee Conwell, Sr. and Edna Williamson Conwell. He had a strong passion and love for the game of baseball. Pete played 4 years in the minor leagues finishing up in 1951 with the Petersburg Generals and later went on to coach. He proudly served his country as Sergeant in the U.S. National Guard for 18 years. Pete had a successful career in the automotive business highlighted as President and Owner of Ted Curry Motors in Petersburg, VA, for over 20 years. He was also President and Co-owner of Dinwiddie Memorial Park Cemetery for over 30 years. Pete was Past President and 60 year member of the Colonial Heights Optimist Club, Past President and member of the Tri-City New Car Dealers Association, Past Master of Edwards Lodge No. 308 AF & AM, and was a faithful and lifetime member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Colonial Heights. He is survived by his wife, Leona Royster Conwell; son, William L. “Billy” Conwell and wife, Dottie, of Colonial Heights; two daughters, Cheree C. “Renee” Patton and husband, Samuel, of Alpharetta, GA, and Kimberly C. Rose and husband, Doug, of Chester; six grandchildren, Meghan Conwell, Meredith Conwell, Lauren Sanborn, Samuel Kyle Patton, Ashley Rose and Aaron Rose; three sisters, Florence C. Atkins, Edith C. Carraway, and Agnes C. Holloway; sister-in-law, Rose R. Moore; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff and caregivers of the Robert E. Brown Memory Unit at the Masonic Home of Virginia for all of their wonderful care. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7th at Immanuel Baptist Church. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 8th at the church with Pastor Fred Adkins and Dr. Doug Echols officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Southlawn Memorial Park with Masonic Rites. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home of Virginia, P.O.
