MSG Donald Dwight Ryan, U.S. Army (retired), 87, of Petersburg, passed away Monday, July 2, 2012 at his residence. Born in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Daniel and Sarah Black Ryan. In addition, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel T. Ryan, grandson Michael Bovinette, and three brothers, Sam, Walter, and Serl Patterson. MSG Ryan retired after 30 years of service with the U.S. Army. He proudly served during World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. He earned numerous medals and citations, including the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Battle Stars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Following his military career, he worked at Philip Morris for 15 years, where he was known as â??Sargeâ? by his co-workers. He was a loving husband and father, and a dedicated member of Washington Street United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruby E. Ryan; sons, Michael D. Ryan and wife, Sharon V. Ryan, and Dennis J. Ryan; daughters, Kathleen R. Burgess and husband, Richard M. Burgess, and Mary A. Sechrist; daughter-in-law, Luanne Ryan; grandchildren, Kimberly Liles, Jennifer L. Sechrist, Ryan M. Burgess, and Zachary T. Burgess. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 6th at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment with full military honors will follow at Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia, VA. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
