Myrtle Toombs, 87, of Petersburg, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2015. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Harry Frederick Handschuh, Jr. and Lillian Madeline Moore; and was preceded in death by her husband, E. Calvin Toombs; two brothers, Harry and Zack Handschuh, and three sisters, Virginia Talbott, Anna Lanier and Arling Carpenter. She was a 1944 graduate of Petersburg High School. Myrtle was retired from the U.S. Army Management Center with 35 years of service. She was also a longtime member of Carson United Methodist Church in Carson, Virginia. She was involved in many clubs and organizations and served as a volunteer at the Southside Regional Medical Center. She is survived by her son, Dr. Larry Toombs and wife, Kay of Prince George; daughter, Dr. Beverly Chappell and husband, James of Dinwiddie; grandsons, Justin, Jeremy and Jordan Toombs and granddaughters, Brooke Hensley and Meredith Martin; a sister, Hilda Carpenter; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home and a funeral service will be held at the funeral home 11:00 am Thursday, January 22, 2015 with the Rev. Robert Livesay and Rev. Joe Hammond, officiating.
