Nadine Burks Payne, long time resident of Petersburg, VA, departed this life on February 26, 2019, at the Crossings of Bon Air, Richmond, VA. She was born in Panther, West Virginia on May 23, 1926 to the late Nellie Gray Akers Burks and Herbert Lee Burks. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Payne Martin, Richmond, VA; granddaughters, Caroline Coker (C.C.) Martin Eakes (Darrell Eakes) Richmond, VA and Sara Adair Martin Clark (Stephen Clark) Knightdale, NC, and great-granddaughters, Charlotte Payne Eakes and Caroline Tinsley (Cate) Eakes of Richmond, VA, and great-grandson, Wallace Fraser Clark of Knightdale, NC. She is also survived by her fraternal twin sister, Florine Burks Stapleton, Williamsburg, VA; brother, Allen Clark Burks; and sister, Dorothy Burks Sinicrope, Princeton, WV. She was predeceased by her husband, Hubert Payne (Coach Hubie Payne), of 59 years. She was the consummate educator and taught in the Petersburg School System for 32 years and for 12 years in West Virginia. Ms. Payne graduated from Concord College, Athens, WV and received her Master of Science from the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia. She was also a devoted member of Washington Street Methodist Church, Petersburg, for over 40 years. She was a selfless and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. To her family and caregivers, she will always be known as Gran – we love you and will miss you terribly. You set the standard for grace, humility, patience, and unselfish love. Hats off to you, Gran. A celebration of her life will be conducted March 23, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the chapel at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Petersburg. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 on March 23 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park.
