Nan Seward Jones

Nan Seward Jones passed quietly from this life at Southside Regional Hospital on Sunday evening June 11, 2017. Born May 22nd, 1916, daughter of the late Albert Lee Seward and Nan Cuthbert Seward. She was a 1933 graduate of Petersburg High School and a 1938 graduate of Longwood College. At Longwood College she was a member of Sigma, Sigma, Sigma and Alpha Kappa Gamma sororities and maintained her membership in Sigma, Sigma, Sigma for most of her life. In 1939 she married Walter H. Brown, Jr., who died in 1981. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Church in Petersburg. Her lifelong interest in the field of art started at an early age when she studied under the tutelage of local artist Anna Dunlop. She was accomplished in all mediums ranging from oil to pen and ink. She was a moving force in the forming of the Petersburg area Art League, now PAAL. She was a past member of the Popular Lawn Garden Club, A.P.V.A., Historic Blandford Church Foundation, Historic Petersburg Foundation, and the Wilcox Watershed Conservancy. In 1982 she married Walter Raleigh Jones of Winston Salem, North Carolina who died in 2001. She was predeceased by son, Richard Scott Brown who died in 1971. She is survived by two sons, Phillip Seward Brown and wife, Carolyn, and Walter H. Brown, III and wife, Myrna; two grandchildren, Walter H. Brown, IV, and Suzanna King and husband, Robin; two step-grandchildren, Tyler Kirks and Jonathan Kirks; four great-grandchildren, Reid Brown, Tucker Brown, Aubrey Scott King and Peyton King; brother, Albert Lee Seward, Jr., and wife, Sally; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a private burial service at Blandford Cemetery. A service of dedication conducted by Rev. Rick Greenwood will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 11:30 A.M., at St. Paul’s Church in Petersburg. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the organization of your choice may be considered. The family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
