Nancy Elder Barnes of Atlanta, formerly of Macon, died December 12, 2011 at Brighton Gardens-Buckhead. She was born in Hopewell, Virginia, the daughter of Elizabeth Shumate Elder and Dr. David Lane Elder and was predeceased by her parents and her brother David Lane Elder, Jr. She graduated from St. Catherineâ??s School in Richmond, Virginia, and Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia where she majored in voice and history. She lived in Macon from 1946 to 1996 when she moved to Atlanta to be near her children and grandchildren. A gifted soprano and pianist, her love of music played a major role in her life. One of her greatest joys was singing in the choir at Vineville Methodist Church in Macon where she was a member. She was a member of the Morning Music Club, Shirley Hills Garden Club and enjoyed gardening. Above all, she was a loving sister, mother and grandmother and is survived by a devoted family including her daughter, Nancy Barnes Howard of Atlanta, her son, A. Emmett Barnes, IV of Atlanta, her brother, George Shumate Elder of Hopewell, Virginia, her grandchildren, Christopher Barnes Howard, Caroline Hill Howard, Hogan Bartlett Barnes and Harrison Elder Barnes, all of Atlanta, her nieces Mason Elder Smith and husband Michael Smith of Charlotte, North Carolina and Elizabeth Elder Read and husband Kirk Read of Richmond, Virginia, grand-nieces Liza Read and Mason Read of Richmond, Virginia and Lane Smith of Charlotte, North Carolina; grand-nephews, Ned Read of Richmond, Virginia, and Michael Smith, Jr. and George Smith of Charlotte, North Carolina, her son-in-law, Pierre Howard of Atlanta and her sister-in-law Mary French Mason Elder of Hopewell, Virginia. Private services will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 in Hopewell, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in memory of Nancy Elder Barnes be made to Vineville Methodist Church Choir, 2045 Vineville Avene, Macon, Georgia 31204.
