Nancy Cormany

d. November 24, 2011

Cormany, Nancy Rives Butterworth Barnard died on November 24, 2011 and has been joyfully reunited in heaven with her parents William Frank and Mildred Jones Butterworth and her brother William Frank Jr. ("Billy Boy") who was lost at sea during WWII in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Nancy is survived by her husband Charles Linwood Cormany; her son William Rives Barnard and his child Andrew Barnard and step-sons Adam Lewis and Kyle Lewis; her daughter and son-in-law Ellen Barnard Vance and Alexander Wood Vance and their son Harrison Vance; and her daughter and son-in-law Lynne Barnard Tickle and James Christopher Tickle and their sons Philip and Pierce Tickle. Also mourning her loss is Nancy's sister Evelyn Bannerman and her husband Glenn; stepson Thomas Marshall Cormany; her former husband Irvin Sutherland Barnard; and several nieces and nephews as well as two great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and brother, Nancy was predeceased by her step-son Charles Scott Cormany. Nancy grew up in Hopewell where she was a former "Miss Hopewell" and graduated from Hopewell High School. Following her marriage to Irvin in 1950, they moved to New York city where Irvin earned his master's degree at NYU and Nancy graduated from The Katherine Gibbs School. Following stints in Chicago, Baton Rouge and Charlotte, they returned to Richmond in the early 60's. Nancy continued raising their children and helping with their business, Barnard Insurance Agency, and the building that housed it and several tenants. After her husband's major illness in 1971, Nancy obtained her agent's license and ran BIA until she was able to sell the agency and the building several years later when it was evident that Irvin would not be able to return to work. Despite the challenges thrown her way with Irvin's illness, she saw to it that her three children had as normal a life as possible and put each of them through college while working full time. Nancy was very active with the National Tobacco Festival beginning with her selection as "Official Hostess" in 1960 and culminating with serving as the first female Board Chair in the festival's final year. She married Charlie in 1989 and they resided happily in coastal South Carolina for many years until her struggle with Alzheimer's forced a move to Richmond to be closer to family. Nancy enjoyed socializing with friends, spending time with her children, and staying in touch with her Hopewell friends through her active involvement with school reunion activities. Additionally, Nancy was a charter member and former president of Bon Air Junior Woman's Club and a member of Bon Way Garden Club. She was an amazing role model for her children and was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend who will be missed by those whose lives she touched. Visitation will be held at J.T. Morriss Funeral Home in Hopewell Tuesday, November 29, 2011 from 7-8:30 pm. The funeral service will be held at the J.T. Morriss Chapel at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 with burial following at the Butterworth Family Cemetery in Dinwiddie. Nancy loved flowers but for those desiring to do so, memorials to The Alzheimer's Association to help fight this insidious disease are preferred.
